In any 3D stress state, three planes exist in which only the normal component of stress remains, the shear component is zero. These are principal planes, the stresses corresponding with these planes are principal stresses.


For 3D multi-axial problems, the uniaxial definition of strains is not applicable. 3D strains can only be defined in terms of displacements of the domain.
